NEW 2 CHAINZ!!!!

As you should already know, there’s a new 2 Chainz Album out. That’s right, an album of banger after banger by the star of the greatest web series of all time. Pretty exciting, isn’t it?

This album is classic 2 Chainz, but it also has some moments that are more serious than maybe you’d expect. Lyrically, sure, but the beats are also slower than BOATS, and the melodies of the songs use lower notes than we’re used to. That’s not to say 2 Chainz hasn’t made music like this before (a lot of ColleGrove, for example), but I’m speaking generally.

I think it all boils down to maturity. Mr. Weave Killer is 39 years old, so it makes sense that we’ve been seeing more developed songs and ideas in his more recent projects. And, like Kanye who is only a year older, it doesn’t seem like he’s gonna slow down anytime soon.

Speaking of songs being just a little bit different than usual, I want to give a special shoutout to the track “Bailan” that features Pharrell. Pharrell has never made a bad musical decision (or a bad fashion decision), and that holds true on this song. It’s different than most 2 Chainz songs, and just another example of Pharrell’s incredible range.

The bars are still funny, “take your babies no harambe,” and “tryna flip a brick/ Shaq at the free throw,” for example. It was also funny when he made fun of mumble rappers, and you gotta love the random lines like “I’m addicted to the rice at Benihana” that he sprinkles into the darker songs on the project.

The features are also great. They sound exactly like you’d expect, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

In the end, is this the greatest album of all time? No, but it’s arguably 2 Chainz’ best project, and it’s a very good one. It’s not necessarily a groundbreaking album, but it’s a big deal for trap music and very fun to listen to, and I don’t see anything wrong with that.

Go Listen to it. -John
